Trail Map of the Esopus Bend Nature Preserve

Sorry this map is so big, but we wanted to give you a detailed view of the property. Please give it a minute to download.

The Schroeder Trail
This 1.2 mile trail follows an old farm road and footpath down to and along Esopus Creek, looping back over a historic Carriage Road, which was once used to gain access to a scow ferry that crossed Esopus Creek at Stony Point. Yellow spur trails (3), (4) and (5) lead to viewpoints of the creek and Stony Point.
    The Meadow Trail
This trail leads to a restored meadow (8) and to the area known as the cove, located across from Saugerties village beach. There is a view of the cove from the blind (9).
    The Wetlands Trail
This trail leads to the wetlands, an environmentally sensitive area. From the trail, there is a view of the wetlands (10) and of a beaver dam (11). Hikers should remain on the trail at all times. A boardwalk will eventually be built to provide greater access into the wetlands.
    The South Trail
Scheduled for completion in 2007, this trail will skirt the Esopus Creek south through a mixed hemlock forest, then turn inland into a deciduous ravine, following a year-round stream with a small cave (1) and waterfall (2). Yellow spur trails will lead to a viewpoint on the creek (6), and climb to the highest point on the Preserve (7), dissecting the South Trail loop 150 feet above sea level.
